Wheel tax for Benton County

It is the worst of times for the Benton County tax payer. Once again the county commission raises the dead issue of a WHEEL TAX. This tax has come up several times in the past twenty years and has been met with a resounding No each time.

Now we face a REAL MENACE in that some of our commissioners are planning an end run around the will of the people. Commissioner Steinbuck supports this move and said as much at last night’s county commission meeting. The Commission will meet December 8 & 15th 2008 at 6pm to take two votes so they can push it through Nashville this session.

This new DANGER will come in the form of a request for a private act to create a wheel tax in Benton County. Of course our State Representative Borchert and State Senator Herron would have to sponsor this private act in Nashville. They have already shown their enthusiasm for this type of action by supporting a private act in Stewart County that enacted this same tax. This flies in the face of Governor Bredesen’s position on balancing a budget through spending cuts. Everyone, except Benton County government, seems to understand that this is NOT a good time to raise taxes in America.

WHAT TO DO:

1. Call your County Commissioners
2. Attend the commission meeting on Dec 8th & 15th
3. Call Senator Herron and tell him you do not want a wheel tax in Benton County.
4. Call Representive Borchert and tell him the same thing.
5. Print off the petition on this web site & collect names.
