Celebrities mourn the death of Kate Spade

Designer Kate Spade, one of the biggest names in American fashion especially known for her sleek handbags, was found dead Tuesday in her NY apartment after committing suicide.

Entertainment portal TMZ revealed that Kate Spade, who was popularly known for her fancy yet sophisticated handbags, hanged herself in her Park Avenue apartment.

The 55-year-old designer and co-founder of the Kate Spade New York label was reportedly discovered "unresponsive" by her housekeeper.

Spade, an iconic fashion designer particularly known for her handbags, was 55 at the time of her death.

Kate launched her namesake brand in 1993, a year before she married her husband.

Spade chose to go into business with her husband Andy, whom she had met while in a clothing store in Phoenix, Arizona.

In 1999, Spade ceded a majority stake in her company to high-end department store chain Neiman Marcus for $34 million. Spade went on to work on philanthropic projects as well as an accessories brand called Frances Valentine, launched two years ago. My deepest sympathy to her family and friends, and her many fans around the world, who loved the wonderful illusions she created.

Zachary Hynek tweeted: "Kate Spade will forever be an icon in fashion and pioneer for all women in business". Prior to launching her fashion line, Spade spent five years at "Mademoiselle", a women's magazine, and eventually become a senior fashion editor and head of accessories. Chelsea Clinton, former U.S. President Bill Clinton's daughter, was among celebrities mourning Spade.

Singer Josh Groban sent "love to her family" and said that "depression does not discriminate and comes without warning", while tweeting the phone number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

"We want to honour her life and her major contribution to the fashion business and express our most honest condolences to the family". "It's amusing how a purse can instantly make you feel like an adult".
