Lava advances, residents warned

The hottest and fastest-moving lava of Kilauea volcano's latest eruption has spread across new parts of the Big Island in Hawaii.

Whatever residents were left in the neighborhood were ordered out on Thursday by Hawaii County Mayor Harry Kim.

Residents have been advised to evacuate by noon Friday.

The Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency said breaches in the channel formed by the Fissure 8 system "can happen without notice and result in rapid moving flows".

And the eruptions are still going strong. Around 1:30 a.m., civil defense warned the lava could reach Beach Road near Four Corners within four to six hours.

Ash is still erupting from Kilauea's summit, Ball added, in addition to seismic activity and gas output.

"Vigorous" lava eruptions continue from the lower East Rift zone fissure system in the area of Leilani Estates and Lanipuna Gardens. The lava fountaining from Fissure 8 has also produced some impressive deposits of Pele's Hair (see below) as the lava is thrown into the air.

Lava continues to devastate the community more than three weeks after the crisis began.

"Rather than shock and surprise it was more of a resolve that, OK, it's come to us now", Steven Neill, a Kapoho evacuee, told CNN affiliate KGMB/KHNL on Wednesday.

'This is the hottest lava that we've seen in this eruption.

Evacuation orders were issued on Monday evening for anyone in the area east of Pomaikai Street to avoid being isolated by the flow. Vog is a haze created when sulfur dioxide gas and other volcanic pollutants mix with moisture and dust. The gas can cause irritation to the eyes, throat and skin, and is especially risky for people with respiratory conditions like asthma.

They join about 2000 residents displaced due to lava flows and toxic sulphur dioxide gas emissions at the outset of the eruption almost four weeks ago further west, in and around the Leilani Estates community. The new road would provide a southwestern evacuation route.

A 61-year-old man in Hawaii was arrested Tuesday after allegedly pulling a gun on a neighbour who was checking his home for lava damage.

It could be a while before power returns.

Police responded Tuesday to a report of gunshots in Leilani Estates and were told by the victim that he and acquaintances were approached by a man in a pickup truck as they surveyed the site where his residence had been burned down by lava, county officials said.

And on Sunday night, after authorities went door-to-door to urge remaining residents in a portion of Leilani Estates to get out, firefighters scrambled to rescue a man whose driveway was covered by fast-moving lava.
