Election officials encouraging people to get out and vote

On May 7, the Santa Barbara County Elections Office sent ballots out to permanent vote-by-mail voters and voters who live in mail ballot precincts. Fifteen Democrats are running for the 5th Congressional District alone. Voters will chose nominees for the general election in November.

Today is primary election day across Pennsylvania, one of those two days each year when citizens can exercise the right to vote and play a role in choosing who will lead our government.

"This is the map that many people think is natural for Pennsylvania, which is a 50-50 state, a classic battleground, but hasn't performed that way in terms of congressional elections for decades", he said by telephone.

Polls are open from 7 a.m.to 8 p.m., and elections officials emphasize that the redistricting decision did not change where anyone in the state will be voting.

Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf will face the victor of a crowded Republican primary that state Sen. Rep. Lamar Smith's seat in the 21st Congressional District is up for grabs. Several are perennial candidates who regularly run for office but seldom survive the primary.

Scott Wagner, a York County state senator since 2014, has always been viewed the front runner.

The ballot also includes state legislative races, as well as contests for House of Representatives and Senate seats.

According to the state Department of State Division of Voter Registration, almost 1.2 million of the state's 8.4 million registered voters are independent or affiliated with minor parties.

The split could be attributed to more Republicans staying home who've participated in past elections, he said, and the few contested races on the ballot.
