Rafa Nadal eager to play down Dominic Thiem hiccup at Madrid Open

Thiem, seeded fifth, had saved 13 of 20 break points he faced before the final, but Zverev converted on two of his four opportunities in the championship match without facing a break point himself.

Germany's Alexander Zverev looked every bit a serious French Open title contender as he crushed Dominic Thiem in straight sets to win the Madrid Open.

"Of course, it would be much better to have the full pressure because I won all the matches".

Zverev is now one of five active players to have won three, the others being Federer, Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray.

Asked if he feels at that level, the German replied: 'Rafa is the favorite no matter where he plays on a clay court.

In doing so, she took her landmark third title, surpassing the two each won by Serena Williams and Simona Halep in Madrid, which established a women's section in 2009.

Showcasing arguably his best tennis of the season thus far, the 24-year-old was dictating play from the start, and wrapped up the win in just under two hours to set up a semi-final against Kevin Anderson.

A double fault gave Thiem the decisive break to open the second set and he broke again for a 4-1 lead before securing victory with a service victor as he reached his 15th career final and fifth in a row on clay.

Shapovalov was able to keep pace with Zverev early but suffered a key break late in the first set, and his momentum crumbled.

"We both should be very proud of this handsome final we played".

Anderson won the first six matchups against Thiem on a hard court before Saturday's match on clay. Past year I made it to the finals in every single tournament.

"I think I placed myself in a good position".
