Bolton meanwhile said the opening of the embassy in a city which the Palestinians also want to make the capital of their promised future state would actually enhance the prospects of peace.

Rick Scott is visiting Israel and will be on hand for the opening of the USA embassy in Jerusalem.

"I think that the reluctance always before - because as has been pointed out, several previous presidents committed to move the embassy to Jerusalem - I think the hesitation has been, that it would end any prospect of an agreement between the Palestinians and the Israelis", Gates told "Face the Nation" moderator Margaret Brennan. A ceremony on Monday will take place on the 70th anniversary of Israel's founding.

"Palestinians must continue protesting peacefully to show the entire world and the Israeli occupation how civilized they are and that they will not concede their legitimate rights". You have Hamas controlling Gaza, Palestinian Authority controlling the West Bank, Gaza is a rocket-launching factory against Israel.

"Tragically, the United States administration has chosen to side with Israel's exclusivist claims over a city that has for centuries been sacred to all faiths", he said in a statement.

The 1-kilometer tunnel was only meters away from the border fence near the Erez crossing into Israel and a short distance away from a kibbutz, said the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman.

Since border rallies began on March 30, at least 48 Palestinians have been martyred - and hundreds more injured - by cross-border Israeli army gunfire, according to the Health Ministry.

A high-ranking delegation of Gaza's Hamas rulers headed Sunday to Egypt, amid diplomatic efforts aimed at containing Monday's mass rally.

US Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan will lead the delegation that will include Mr Trump's daughter Ivanka, her husband and senior White House aide Jared Kushner, and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

More than 40 Palestinians have been killed during six weeks of protests and tens of thousands of Gazans are expected at tented border encampments in the coming days.
