Britain condemns Iran attack on Israel

Israel launched strikes on what it claimed were Iranian military targets inside Syria - they said the action was in response to rockets being fired at Israeli military positions in the Golan Heights.

The White House swiftly condemned Iran's "provocative rocket attacks from Syria against Israeli citizens" and expressed strong support for "Israel's right to act in self-defense", while Russian Federation said the Israeli strikes marked a risky escalation and urged both Israel and Iran to avoid provoking each other.

They say there are no Shia forces in the area and that reports that Iran fired at Israel are false.

"In our contacts with the Iranian leadership and the leadership of Israel, including yesterday's meeting between President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, we emphasized the need for avoiding any mutually provoking moves", Lavrov said. Israeli ministers have issued explicit warnings to Damascus several times in recent months, and hit the regime's air defense systems in Thursday's strikes.

Qasemi said the attacks were an attempt by global supporters of rebel groups fighting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to shore them up after their "many failures" and to try to "tip the scales in their favour".

Israel views Iran as its archenemy, citing Iran's calls for Israel's destruction, support for militant groups across the region and growing military activity in neighboring Syria.

In Iran, the news of the fighting was reported as a conflict between Syria and Israel.

"Their presence will only cause problems and damage".

"We are not interested in the atomic bomb, but we are increasing our missile capabilities in other fields so that Israel can not sleep well", he was quoted as saying by semi-official ISNA News Agency.

Dr Mahathir has said he will eventually stand aside to allow Mr Anwar to take over the running of the country. However, he said officials would seek to bring back the rule of law and prosecute those who break it.

Israel released maps and even a simulated video of the strikes it carried out on Iranian targets in Syria.

Opposition fighters and their families left Babila, Beit Sahem and Yalda, three southern suburbs that were held by rebels for years, Syrian state media and a war monitor said. Syrian state TV quoted a Syrian military official as saying Israel was targeting air defense positions and trying to hit radar stations. "The Iranian regime's deployment into Syria of offensive rocket and missile systems aimed at Israel is an unacceptable and highly unsafe development for the entire Middle East".

The United Nations, Western nations and Saudi Arabia say Iran supplies the Houthis with long-range missiles capable of reaching Riyadh.

The spokesman did not mention the Iranian bases Israel said were targeted in the operation.

Four of the 20 rockets were on target, he added, but were then intercepted, while the rest fell short.

The Golan flare-up with Israel "is just further demonstration that the Iranian regime can not be trusted and another good reminder that the president made the right decision to get out of the Iran deal", White House press secretary Sarah Sanders told Fox News.

Iran has been coy about its own alleged involvement but has strongly condemned the Israeli attacks and the world's reaction - or lack of it.

"There are plenty of neocons in Washington surrounding [US] President [Donald] Trump that want the same thing and are all too willing to play along with this", the analyst said.

Iranian state television broke its silence over the Israeli airstrikes late Thursday morning, the start of the Iranian weekend.
