One dead and four injured in knife attack in central Paris

The attack took place in the heart of the French capital in a district popular with tourists for its many restaurants and cafes, landmark retail stores, and the Paris opera.

Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) claimed responsibility for the attack, the group's affiliated website Amaq said.

"I was taking orders and I saw a young woman trying to get into the restaurant in panic", Jonathan, a waiter at a Korean restaurant, told AFP news agency.

France's interior minister says authorities are working to identify the assailant who stabbed five people in central Paris and anyone who helped him.

The bloodbath follows a series of ISIS and Al Qaeda attacks in France which has seen nearly 250 killed by terrorists since early 2015.

Police arrested the parents of the attacker. A friend came to her aid and the attacker left, "hitting on all the doors, all the shops", the witness told BFM.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo tweeted (in French): "Tonight, our city was bruised".

Safety Check was originally introduced in France on November 13, 2015, after the terrorist attacks in Paris and Saint-Denis, which killed 130 people, including 89 at the Bataclan Theater.
