Israel blamed the Quds forces, a special detachment of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, for being behind the missiles.

Later, the Israelis launched a series of missiles strikes on Syrian military positions, and said that it had targeted Iranian military bases in the country.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said today the new death toll from attacks early Thursday was 27, including at least 11 Iranians and six Syrian soldiers.

Note that the experts of the human rights organization based in London, receive data from the network of informants in Syria. Actual rockets slammed Israeli military positions inside the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

The observatory initially reported 23 killed in the strikes and did not specify their nationality.

Israel, which nearly never comments on strikes inside Syria, did not admit to carrying out Tuesday's attack, but it occurred shortly after the Israeli military went on "high alert" in response to "unusual movements of Iranian forces in Syria".

The Israeli airstrikes capped months of rising tension between Jerusalem and Damascus, which have been poised for a fight over the presence of Iranian military assets inside Syrian territory. State-run TV said they were carried out by the U.S-led coalition, which is operating in the area against IS.

But Thursday's air raid came amid heightened tension in the regime after President Trump announced on Tuesday that the USA would withdraw from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.

Israel has long warned it will not accept Iran entrenching itself militarily in neighboring Syria, where Iran backs Assad's regime in the country's seven-year civil war.

It added that 28 Israeli fighter jets launched at least 60 missiles in Syria.

The Israeli strikes, however, have also become intolerable by Syria, which can not just keep taking in such attacks that target its sovereignty without punching back.

It said it hit targets near the capital, in southern and central Syria, targeting weapons storage, logistics sites and intelligence centres used by elite Iranian forces in Syria.

"What is necessary is that we look at reality as it is not as we wish it to be we wish that there was an Iranian leadership that was desirous of peace, whose hand was outstretched in peace as is ours, who didn't call for our annihilation, who didn't attempt to gobble up the Middle East and impose theocratic dictatorship".
