According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Twitter account, police deputies arrived onsite at Highland High School "within 5 minutes of the multiple calls" they received about an active shooter on campus. A sheriff's deputy reached by telephone said he did not have immediate information about how many shots were fired and the relationship between the victim and the suspect.

"I had all the kids run", said teacher Elizabeth Cramer. I heard it at the other side of the school. Students on the campus remained calm and texted their classmates, telling them to stay away from the area, and faculty members directed deputies throughout the campus, allowing them to clear the building faster, McDonnell said. Both individuals are said to be attending the high school. While police searched for the suspect and secured the area, the school was on lockdown. There was one shot. Shortly after, a report came in of a possible threat at nearby Manzanita Elementary School, which turned out to be false.

"We are all concerned about the safety of our children", Palmdale School District Superintendent Raul Maldonado said in an alert.

CNN reports that the incident occurred approximately around 7 am PT, even as several students were still entering the school compound.

It has also been projected to drive premiums up. "They're not really thinking about the price to the system with those proposals". And the system for paying for the drugs dispensed under Medicare's Part B program also has to change, Azar added.

Palmdale is located about 100 kilometres north of Los Angeles. The sheriff's office said a boy had been shot in the arm at the school and was in stable condition at a local hospital.

The shooter was detained off campus by officers, at a Vons grocery store, near the school's premises, as reported by CNN.

The deadliest school shooting this year was on February 14, when a former student killed 17 students and staff at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
