The three victims, believed to be a worshiper, care taker and priest, were targeted by three armed men, who reportedly walked into the Mosque screaming and shouting.

Mr Balram said the motive for the horrifying attack was not yet clear.

While a graphic video of the attack doing its round on social media, shows police on scene, provincial police spokesman, Captain Nqobile Gwala said they were unaware of incident at this stage.

IPSS Medical Rescue's Paul Herbst said: "IPSS can now confirm that the person with the slit throat unfortunately has passed away in hospital".

"The (imam) was tied up and thrown to his knees and his throat was slit".

The other victims were in critical condition after the attack in the eastern town of Verulam, just north of the city of Durban, South Africa's state broadcaster SABC reported.

The imam at a mosque in South Africa was stabbed to death on Thursday in an unprecedented attack in a country known for its peaceful religious relations. Nothing was taken from the mosque or from the victims, that's why we're saying it doesn't look like a robbery. About 1.5% of the country's population is Muslim.

The attack came shortly ahead of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, which begins around May 16.

"It was a sudden attack and at this point we don't have enough information".
