Thunderstorm with squall likely in Delhi

Weather conditions in Delhi and Rajasthan have begun to improve, with chances of only scattered rains today. The India Meteorological Department has issued a five-day weather warning, with light to moderate rainfall in the northern states.

After a hot summer day, the national capital was hit by a dust storm on Monday night and brought the temperature down, according to the weatherman.

Parts of Delhi witnessed a dust storm coupled with a drizzle in the evening, with MeT department keeping an eye on its progress.

The high-velocity wind swept through Delhi around 11.15 PM, an official at the Safdarjung observatory said.

Chances of severe storm decreased? Heavy rains are also expected at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, south interior Karnataka and Kerala.

No significant weather warning has been issued for Delhi either. A dust storm occurred in Sriganganagar disrupting normal life in the area. "Till tomorrow there's a possibility of a dust storm and thunderstorm in Delhi", IMD official, Devendra Pradhan told ANI. The wind speed last night was 70 kilometres per hour. No casualties have been reported so far.

Notably, the Haryana government had ordered closure of schools on May 7 and 8, with Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma yesterday saying that the decision had been taken in view of the MeT warning. If wind speed is more than 90kmph, then trains will be put oh hold at platforms... no train will enter the platform with a speed of more than 15kmph. However, in case the wind speed is higher than 90 kilometers per hour, services may be hit.

While most of the part of India is going through harsh summers, Himachal Pradesh's Shimla and Uttarakhand's Kedarnath and Badrinath got hit by severe hailstorm and have received fresh snowfall recently.

As precautionary measures, Delhi government has ordered all afternoon schools to remain closed today. It has asked people to keep children inside home or shelter.

Following the IMD warning, the Delhi Metro has chose to exercise extreme caution in running of trains. Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, western Uttar Pradesh and sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are likely to witness similar weather conditions.
