Shubman Gill, part of the triumphant India under-19 World Cup team, showed glimpses of his potential when he guided Kolkata Knight Riders to a morale-boosting six-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings in their Vivo-IPL contest at the Eden Gardens on Thursday.

Chasing 178 for victory, Gill, an U-19 World Cup victor, joined hands with Karthik for an unbroken 83-run fifth wicket partnership off 36 deliveries that took the game away from MS Dhoni's team despite their making early inroads.

The 18-year-old Gill started brilliantly, hitting Watson for three fours in an over, but displayed patience when KKR was four down for 97 in the 12th over. The left-hander struck a 20-ball 32 after claiming two wickets for 20 runs in his four overs. "This boy is special", Dinesh remarked in his post-match talk.

The KKR skipper Dinesh Karthik won the toss and put CSK into bat on a good surface. Despite its winning streak, CSK hasn't been using its top five batsmen in the best possible manner, critics feel. He is back to representing the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the eleventh edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

What though a score near 200 does is put pressure on the opposition to start well and maintain a scoring rate near 10 runs an over.

The result: Kolkata Knight Riders 4-180 (Gill 57*, Narine 2-20) beat Chennai Super Kings 5-177 (Dhoni 43*, Asif 1-32) by 6 wickets.

"Dhoni will have to re-look the tactic of sending Faf du Plessis up the order for it means that the in-form batsman and orange cap holder Ambati Rayudu gets less overs to play".

After the completion of 11 overs during CSK's innings, an ardent fan of the skipper invaded the dugout despite heavy security to touch the feet of Dhoni.

"Dropped catches don't help", said Kohli, whose team has only three victories.

Kolkata tried taking control of the match when they undid the batsmen Suresh Raina and Ambati Rayudu in quick succession in the middle overs.
