Gleyber Torres: Should handle full-time role at keystone

The Yankees are promoting top prospect Gleyber Torres to the major leagues, a source confirmed to the Daily News.

The Yankees acquired Torres in a blockbuster trade with the Chicago Cubs in the 2016 season. The right-handed-hitting Torres has shown plenty of upside with the bat since his promotion to Triple-A in 2017, having slashed.331/.409/.488 in 149 plate appearances at the minors' highest level. That played a significant role in his slow start, forcing the Yankees to give the job to Tyler Wade who had a good spring.

Before the game, the 21-year-old was asked if he was ready for the next step: "Yeah", Torres said. "Entering Saturday's game, he (Torres) was hitting.370 with a home run and 11 RBIs in 13 games".

Gleyber now 2 for 2 tonight after this line drive to left.

What are Gleyber Torres' stats? If they called him up earlier, the organization would have lost a year of service time.

However, Bayern later suffered their own spot-kick heartache, losing on penalties to Chelsea when they hosted the final. Madrid won the 2000 semifinal series 3-2 on aggregate and advanced with the same score in the 2002 quarterfinals.

Torres can play all over the infield, but for now Boone said the club plans to play him on a regular basis at second base, which has been a problem spot this season. On the other hand, NY hasn't gotten much production at second from accomplished veteran Neil Walker or youngster Tyler Wade, so Torres could be a factor there for a 10-9 club that's lagging well behind the incredibly hot Red Sox (17-2) in the AL East early in the season. From what they have given the team, Torres can only be better. He was given a locker between sluggers Gary Sanchez and Aaron Judge, and wore No. 25 in pinstripes — same as former Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira. But in order for the Yanks to find playing time and roster room for Torres, something will need to change.

"I feel comfortable in all positions", said Torres, who played 321 minor league games at shortstop, 23 games at third base and 14 games at second, "and the most important thing is to help my team at any position and any opportunity".

After his standout performance Saturday, Andujar stayed diplomatic about what was then just a potential Torres call-up.

Whether or not the number-five prospect in all of baseball is the lineup tomorrow is yet to be seen.
