Southwest Airlines pilot Captain Tammy Jo Shults and First Officer Darren Ellisor have been hailed as heroes for safely making the emergency landing at Philadelphia International Airport.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it will issue an airworthiness directive that will require inspections of certain CFM56-7B engines. In addition, Delta Air Lines DAL said it would comply with any changes instituted by regulators.

"In aviation, there should be inspection techniques and procedures in place to detect something like (metal fatigue)", NTSB Chairman Robert Sumwalt said Wednesday.

Riordan died from blunt impact trauma of the head, neck and torso, a spokesman for the Philadelphia Department of Public Health said. The broken blade tore up the engine and threw debris against the plane, breaking a window.

National Transportation Safety Board investigators on the scene were expected to wrap up their work in Philadelphia on Saturday, the agency said on Friday.

A preliminary examination of the GE engine showed evidence of metal fatigue, according to NTSB officials who said a fan blade broke off from its hub during flight. The engines have been in circulation since 1997 and are widely used in Boeing BA 737-700 planes.

It can occur in fan blades, the aluminium skin on most planes or other metal parts. Those items, too, were sucked out of the plane, witnesses said.

It is not known whether or not the victim was wearing a seat belt when the window next to her smashed, nor whether it could have saved her.

Matt Tranchin, who was heading home to Dallas, began texting his eight-months-pregnant wife and his parents that he loved them and telling them things he wanted his unborn son to know if the plane crashed and he didn't make it. Gray Hall reports during Action News at 5pm on April 18, 2018.

Hundreds of thousands of Israelis have taken to the streets to demand that the government not deport African asylum seekers. But it also threatens to lead toward the fulfillment of that negative prophecy, that a lifetime may only last 70 years.

Sumwalt said the leading edge of the jet's left wing suffered damage after the engine blew.

Other members of the community that Riordan worked closely with through the United Way are also remembering her for her incredible work ethic. Other airlines have issued press releases stating that they will also undertake their own safety inspections.

The 737 landed at about 305 kilometres an hour.

"People aboard that plane, God put people on that plane for a reason, and everybody acted, and everybody stood strong", Andrew Needum said.

Southwest Airlines Co (LUV.N) confirmed Friday it has sent $5,000 checks to passengers aboard a flight that made an emergency landing this week after an engine failed, killing a passenger. Tuesday's accident occurred en route from NY to Dallas.

The jet blew an engine at 32,000 feet and got hit by shrapnel that smashed a window.

An engine on a Southwest jet exploded Tuesday while the plane was flying from NY to Dallas, and debris hit it, causing extensive damage. According to friends at her alma mater, Shults was among the first female fighter pilots in the U.S. Navy.

Erin Hagenow, Junior Achievement's president, said Riordan was unmatched in her passion for the organization's mission and the students it serves. The woman was later stretchered off the plane, he said.
