"Get ready Russian Federation, because they will be coming, nice and new and 'smart!' " Trump tweeted Wednesday, referring to USA missiles.

"America does not seek an indefinite presence in Syria under no circumstances", Trump said re-litigating his plan, adding, "As other nations step up their contributions, we look forward to the day when we can bring our warriors home".

Syria's Foreign Ministry said Wednesday that Trump's threats to attack are "reckless" and endanger worldwide peace and security.

But Mattis said a "little over a double" the number of weapons had been used than in 2017, when the U.S., acting alone, had struck a Syrian airfield with 58 Tomahawk missiles.

"Russia in the most serious way condemns the attack on Syria where Russian military servicemen help the legitimate government to fight terrorism", Putin said.

Turkey joined as well, describing the attack against the Syrian government as an "appropriate" response.

U.S. defense secretary James Mattis told reporters later that the strikes were a "one-time shot" unless the Syrian government carried out more chemical weapons attacks, which could attract more retaliatory action from the allies. He said at least one chemical was used - chlorine, which also has legitimate industrial uses and had not previously triggered a USA military response. But US intelligence agencies have not completed their assessment or reached a final conclusion, the officials said. "Get ready Russian Federation, because they will be coming, nice and new and 'smart!'", Trump wrote in a post on Twitter.

Military officials must consider the response from Russian Federation, which has threatened to conduct counter-strikes against the United States and has positioned some of its most advanced weaponry, including the stealth SU-57 fighter, in Syria.

Russia's United Nations ambassador says top priority is to avert war in Syria, doesn't rule out possibility of U.S.

"The immediate priority is to avert the danger of war", Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia told reporters following a closed-door meeting of the Security Council.

" We hope that there will be no point of return - that the USA and their allies will refrain from military action against a sovereign state", Nebenzia informed press reporters late Thursday evening hours.

"It not only undercuts deterrence theory, it also sends a signal globally that you can use chemical weapons - just don't let them upset us", said Nicholas Heras, a fellow at the Center for a New American Security in Washington.

The U.S., France and Britain have been in extensive consultations about launching a military strike as early as the end of this week, U.S. officials have said.

With punitive United States military action seemingly imminent, Russian Federation scrambled to deflect blame from Syria's Bashar al-Assad and, according to a monitor group, regime forces evacuated key defense buildings in Damascus.

He said he would also strive to prevent an escalation of conflict across the Middle East. "This would be pre-decisional", Mattis told the House of Representatives Armed Services Committee.

Among the chief factors military planners must consider are air defenses in Syria, which were bolstered by Russia's decision to enter the war in 2015 and could pose a threat should the Pentagon employ manned aircraft in the attack. A joint military operation, possibly with France rather than the the lead, could send a message of global unity about enforcing the prohibitions on chemical weapons and counter Syria's political and military support from Russian Federation and Iran. May had recalled the ministers from their Easter holiday for the meeting to discuss Britain's response to what she has cast as a barbaric attack that can not go unchallenged.
