NY authorities say one person died after a fire broke out in an apartment at the city's Trump Tower on the evening of April 7. An investigation is ongoing.

A raging fire that tore through a 50th-floor apartment at Trump Tower on Saturday killed a man inside and sent flames and thick, black smoke pouring from windows of the president's namesake skyscraper.

One man is dead in the blaze that broke out at Trump Tower this evening, according to a law enforcement source. Very confined (well built building). Fireman (and women) did a great job.

Trump Tower, which opened in 1984, is located on Fifth Ave. and 57th midtown Manhattan.

Then-New York city mayor and now staunch Trump ally Rudy Giuliani signed the costs needing sprinklers into force on March 24, 1999, having actually opposed it when it was first proposed in 1997. Residents in their units on other floors at the time of the fire, however, hold a different view; multiple residents said there was no official evacuation notice. There were no members of first family in residence. The apartments are listed on floors 66-68, although the building is technically only 58 stories high. I nearly fainted. I thought we would die, " Lalitha Mason, who lives on the 36th floor of Trump Tower, told the New York Post.

The all came in just before 6 pm Saturday and within minutes, about 200 firefighters and EMS workers arrived on scene.

The cause of the fire is now unknown, but according to the New York City Fire Department, the fire was centered in a single large apartment, where they found one critically injured resident.

President Trump was not in New York City this weekend.

Meanwhile, another resident, Lalitha Masson, described barricading herself and her husband in their 36-floor apartment.

She said she started praying because she felt it was the end. "Investigators say there was no 911 call from inside the apartment", they noted.
