Think of it as a one-way intercom, with no set up is required. It's possible to disable this feature through Alexa's settings menu, as well as to control whether the functionality works while the device is password locked.

To create an Alexa Announcement, simply say "Alexa, announce", and then say your announcement aloud.

You can already call another Echo device using a feature called Drop In; the Announcements capability announced today is just for one-way blasts.

If you want to exclude a specific device within your household, say, in the bedroom where your husband is sleeping, Amazon said you can use the Do Not Disturb setting.

Rupert Murdoch offers to sell Sky News to Disney to appease regulator
It added: "As the regulatory process remains ongoing, shareholders are advised to take no action at this stage". Disney would buy Sky News regardless of whether its proposed acquisition of Fox's assets proceeds.

Amazon started rolling out this feature today for customers in the USA and Canada.

This gives the tablets the same abilities as the retailer's Echo range of smart speakers, although audio quality from the slates won't be as good as the dedicated devices. Additionally, the selection of available smart locks compatible with Amazon Key has been expanded and now includes locks from major manufacturers Kwikset and Yale. Third-party Alexa devices aren't included. It also matches Google Home, which has had music as part of its own Routines feature since it went live in March.

So, for example, if you're preparing dinner for the whole family, an announcement could summon everyone to the dining room.

Amazon says the feature is rolling out this week.
