(Gates has pleaded guilty to lying to investigators and Manafort is awaiting trial.) In sentencing documents, Mueller claims that van der Zwaan and Gates held discussions with a former Russian intelligence officer at the end of the 2016 campaign, ABC reports.

Alex van der Zwaan, who worked with Gates and former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort while he practiced law at a large global firm, admitted to lying and failing to turn over emails to Mueller's team in February.

Paul Manafort, who led the Trump campaign for several months in 2016, has challenged Mueller's authority and asked a judge to dismiss an indictment charging him with crimes including money laundering conspiracy and false statements.

Van der Zwaan received a 30-day prison sentence as well as a $20,000 fine and two months probation. That individual, identified only as "Person A" in the filings from Mueller's team, is believed to be Konstantin Kilimnik, who worked for Manafort's lobbying firm in Ukraine, according to Reuters. John Dowd, Trump's former attorney, called for Mueller's probe to be shut down.

Russian Federation probe special counsel Robert Mueller is reportedly investigating a private consulting firm with ties to an adviser who frequently met with Jared Kushner in the early months of the Trump administration.

Andrew Weissmann, a prosecutor with Mueller's office, disputed the defence's characterization of van der Zwaan's cooperation, saying he returned to the United States after his first interview because he was compelled to do so by a grand jury subpoena. Manafort has pleaded not guilty and denied any wrongdoing related to Russian election interference. Van der Zwaan is the first person to be convicted and sentenced as a result of the special counsel's investigation. Attorneys for the defendant had pushed for a sentence of probation, noted that Van der Zwaan's wife is due to give birth in August.

Manafort's legal team has argued that Rosenstein inappropriately gave the special counsel's office an unlimited "blank check" when he authorized Mueller last May to investigate any matter that "arose or may arise" from an examination of the Trump team's ties to Russian Federation.
