A new team focused on Experiences and Devices will be lead by Rajesh Jha, Microsoft Executive Vice President of the Office Product Group, while another new team, lead by Scott Guthrie, Executive Vice President of the Cloud Enterprise Group, will be focussing on the company's Cloud and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Platform.

New Engineering Teams Under Jha, the new Experiences & Devices team will be responsible for creating "a unifying product ethos across our end-user experiences and devices", particularly for mobile and multi-device users, according to Nadella.

Microsoft has launched another major restructuring that will see the software giant focus its efforts less on the Windows operating system, and more on the cloud and AI going forward.

As part of the reorganization, work on Windows is set to be split up between two groups. This new division will also include its teams working on augmented and mixed reality technologies. They also talked about Myerson's plans after the transition completes (and the significant changes will be smoothed thanks to Myerson's cooperation over the coming months).

But it is clear from the latest Microsoft reorganisation that CEO Satya Nadella believes the future of Microsoft lies in AI and cloud computing. One of my deeply held lessons from my Exchange days was the importance of that feedback loop with customers and fans, and that's why we created the Windows Insider Program so we could build Windows 10 led by your feedback.

"Having a chief product officer is an indication that the company is leaning more into hardware products, not backing off", he told SiliconANGLE.

Myerson had also been in charge of Redmond's failed Windows Phone push.

Microsoft's Windows 10 operating system is moving closer to overtaking Windows 7, although the adoption rate of Windows 10 has slowed down over time. Business AI will be merged with business applications under James Phillips, while Eric Lockard will lead a cloud + AI division and Alex Kipman will handle the cloud side of the mixed reality business and Eric Boyd will handle AI cognitive services- things like Azure's machine learning tools.

"This reorganization clearly outlines Microsoft's priorities-cloud, coupled with AI, and an improved experience for users of Microsoft's applications", Ed Anderson, research vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner, told eWEEK. Harry Shum was named as the head of the research unit, which will focus on developing and fine-tuning new AI products.

"We'll talk more about these changes at the Q&A next week and the important work ahead", Nadella said.

Nadella shared the news in an email to employees.
