The two statues of Lenin were pulled down at Belonia and Sabroom in South Tripura district.

The protests took a very violent turn when petrol bombs were hurled at the BJP office in Gandhipuram, Coimbatore, and three people from Thanthai Periyar Dravida Kazhagam (TPDK) have been arrested in the case.

Tripura's statue politics soon reverberated in Tamil Nadu.

Incidents of attack on statues of Communist idol Lenin, social reformer Periyar and right wing intellectual Shyama Prasad Mukherjee have staged protests in Tripura, Tamil Nadu and Bengal. Analysts say that though vandalism by a mob in Tripura could be by overzealous people opposed to the Left ideology, the incidents in other parts of the country were thoughtfully planned and executed by supporters of different political ideologies as a reaction to the first incident. Though the popular outrage and anger of BJP leadership forced Raja to apologise and delete his post, once again, the damage had been done.

According to reports, the Prime Minister spoke with Minister of Home Affairs Rajnath Singh in this regard and strongly disapproved of such incidents. Through the Facebook post, Raja said that Periyar statues in his state could be the next justifying the Tripura incidents.

Recording the submission, the bench suo motu impleaded the Tamil Nadu government and passed the direction. "We Tamilians will protect it", he said, alleging that this issue had been raised to divert attention from the formation of the Cauvery management board. Asked if the BJP should take action against Raja, Haasan said "that would be the proper, decent thing to do". The BJP, which rules at the Centre and 21 states along with its allies, can't afford to be placed in that category, particularly when it prides itself on strong leadership from Modi and party chief Amit Shah.

Even politicians are condemning and expressing their anger over desecration of statues.

Muthuraman was one of the two persons arrested by police for allegedly vandalising a bust-size statue of Ramasamy, in an inebriated condition, the other was identified as Francis.

The incidents took place days after the declaration of the Assembly poll result in Tripura, where BJP and its ally the IPFT have won two-third majority against the CPI (M) led Left Front which had been in power for 25 years.

Meanwhile, the CPI said Francis is not a party activist.
