PM Modi launches "Amma two-wheeler scheme" in Chennai

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday stressed on the importance of empowering women for the development of household.

Modi said that the new initiative will go a long way in women empowerment and protection of nature.

"When a woman is empowered, the entire family is empowered".

He added, "On empowering women, we empower the entire family".

Stating that the NDA government was working in this direction, he said it is focussed on "empowering ease of living for the common citizen".

The Tamil Nadu government will launch the scheme of Rs. 25000 subsidy for women to buy two-wheelers.

The prime minister also took a dig at the Congress.

Speaking to media in Chennai, he said "Yesterday's unveiling of Jayalalithaa's statue is a matter of happiness, not just for the party cadre but for Tamils all over the world".

He said 70 lakh saplings would be planted through out the year and also thanked the Prime Minister for lauding the ancient language Tamil recently. The union government was also working towards the modernisation of fishing.

The Prime Minister further said that with the change in Factory's Act, women are now allowed to work in night shifts as well.

Palaniswami will soon lead a delegation of farmers and leaders from all parties to urge Modi to constitute the Cauvery Management Board within six weeks, as directed by the Supreme Court. The party also launched Namadhu Amma, AIADMK's mouthpiece. Registration of houses under government schemes is being done in the name of women. Over 3 lakh women have already applied for the subsidy, and the Tamil Nadu government has said it is in the process of scrutinising the applications and shortlisting the recipients.

Earlier the prime minister was welcomed by Governor Banwarilal Purohit, Palaniswamy and top State officials at Chennai airport.

Modi received a colourful welcome in Chennai, with the route of his short drive in the city lined with flags of the BJP and the ruling AIADMK.

The scheme, providing 50% subsidized two wheelers to working women, was part of late Jayalalithaa's 2016 election manifesto.
