"Snapchat could eventually experience more growth in older age groups, since it's redesigning its platform to be easier to use", Debra Aho Williamson, an analyst at eMarketer, said in a statement.

Facebook replied that its user base is not affected as other age groups are joining the platform. The research firm estimates that another 2.1 million users in the US younger than 25 will leave Facebook this year. Around 5.8% of those in the 18-24 age bracket will leave the platform.

Facebook lost approximately 2.8 million USA users under 25 a year ago, a small amount in comparison to the company's vast user base but indicative of a general decline in interest for the platform amongst younger Americans.
