Snow and ice warning for swathes of Scotland overnight

Tonight will see more frost and icy patches develop after dark, and it is expected that we will see rain at some stage.

Heavy rain is expected across Northern Ireland during Saturday afternoon and evening with up to an inch of rainfall expected.

Public Health England forecasters have extended a cold weather health alert until Tuesday and today swathes of the country were hit by wind and even some snow.

It will spread eastwards through the evening and early night, falling as sleet and snow in many areas.

'Overnight it is very windy for much of the country. Wind will be a feature later in the day.

It will see wintry showers give accumulations of up to 3cm of snow, with larger amounts on higher ground - especially in Ulster and Connacht. Sunny spells and scattered wintry showers will follow from the west later and continue on Wednesday night with snow in places. Inland the winds will be more breezy at around 15 miles per hour and gusts of 25.

The warning is in place from just after midnight on Sunday morning and into 11am.

Monday will be cold, with highest temperatures of 4°C to 7°C.

South Wales and the south-west of England are forecast for the worst of the wind and rain tomorrow. Highest temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees.

He added: "On Sunday we're back into a westerly air flow, which normally wouldn't be particularly cold, but as the air is originating from the very cold Arctic Canada region the air will be cold enough to bring snow to sea level".
