At least 19 dead in Hong Kong bus crash

Separately in Indonesia, at least 27 people died when a bus carrying domestic tourists crashed on the island of Java, police said yesterday.

Images of the scene showed the passenger bus lying on its side, with the top of the bus appearing to have been ripped off.

"The latest figures ... include 17 male and two female", a government spokeswoman said, adding "we are still counting the number of injuries".

Police said the cause of the incident was being investigated, while the driver of the bus was arrested following the accident. "And then it was like the tyre slipped, and the bus turned". They are being taken to 12 different hospitals, and a temporary morgue has been set up at the scene. It was really chaotic on the bus.

Last September, three people were killed and 31 injured after a Citybus double-decker mounted a kerb in Sham Shui Po.

KMB general manager Godwin So Wai-kei said the 30-year-old unidentified driver joined the company in 2014 and had driven the route before.

He said the franchise bus company would pay $10,000 to each injured person and family of the deceased.

The crash was the deadliest in Hong Kong since 2003, when 21 people were killed when a double-decker bus broke through a guardrail and careened off a road.
