Reavie gained momentum with an eagle on the par-five third hole during his final round, but a bogey on the par-three 16th forced him to birdie the last two in order to tie Woodland atop the leaderboard.

When Jayhawk fans were anxious, Woodland hit a tremendous shot from the fairway bunker on the playoff hole.

Woodland won the hole and the tournament with a par and Reavie, who had birdied the final two holes to force the playoff, made bogey.

A week ago, at Torrey Pines, Woodland was also in the hunt for victory. "I felt like I hit a lot of good putts, so it was a little disappointing to not see really anything go in on the back nine". "Play aggressive off the tee, play aggressive with the irons, and attack from there".

"I just didn't get it going early and I don't know what to say", Mickelson said after his final round. My caddie asked me when I got done, did I know I made nine birdies.

"I was just excited that I still had a chance to win the tournament", said Reavie, who served this event as a standard bearer for many years as a kid. The question was, could Woodland do what he had not done in 5 tour season?

Former Arizona State players Jon Rahm and Chez Reavie were a stroke back along with Bryson DeChambeau.

The American's fast finish at TPC Scottsdale closed a four-under 67 and saw him edge ahead of a three-way tie on 13 under.

After tapping in to win it, Woodland pointed to the sky, then did his CBS interview with son Jaxon in his arms. Mickelson missed the fairway and needed help from the gallery just to find his ball. On Thursday in the first round, he had a double bogey on 16 and a bogey on 17. "I spent some time with Pete Cowen", he said.

In six 54-hole leads, Fowler has gone on to win just once. 15-17 to fall out of contention.

The world number seven, who was runner-up here in 2016, began the day at 14-under-par but ended on -12 after a two-over 73 to end in a tie for 11th place.

The second-place finish was the best of the season for Reavie, who finished 18th at the Sony Open in Hawaii and 52nd at the CareerBuilder Challenge in La Quinta, Calif.

The PGA Tour now moves back to California for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am. "I've played well on them in the past, and I'm hoping to build on this week's performance".

"I played great all week", Reavie said. "I think it's just overall feeling of the week".

The WM Phoenix Open had not necessarily been a happy hunting ground for Woodland in recent times, missing two of his last three cuts but clearly his improving form has carried over to a layout which has not always been good to him.
