Taiwan is prone to earthquakes and on Sunday a quake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck nearby.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake struck late Tuesday about 13 miles northeast of Hualien, on the island's east coast.

A number of buildings collapsed or sustained damage, including the Marshal Hotel.

A 6.4 magnitude natural disaster has struck near the coast of Taiwan, with fears the tremors may have left people trapped inside a building.

Authorities said some people remained trapped but were unable to give an overall figure.

Taiwan lies on the Pacific "ring of fire" where earthquakes are common. The Parkview Hotel and a residential complex, No. 41 Guosheng Sixth Street, are also reported to have tilted significantly under the force of the tremor. People were requested to move on to the safer place.

Photos on Apple Daily showed a man calling for help from the window of another building and wires dangling from the collapsed ceiling of a local hospital.

The natural disaster hit the east coast of Taiwan, about 14 miles east-northeast of Hualian, around 11:50 p.m. local time, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

USA geologists said it was the latest in a string of quakes to hit the region in recent days.

Reports continue to come in of other damage registered to buildings and infrastructure. "There are cracks on the wall, even the fridge moved", he said.

The island of Taiwan sits near a junction of two tectonic plates and is regularly hit by earthquakes.

Some people in Taiwan are still scarred by a 1999 magnitude-7.6 quake in which more than 2,000 people died.
