Gerard Moreno opened the scoring for Espanyol in the 66th minute, but just as it seemed they would celebrate a famous victory, up popped Gerard Pique in the 82nd minute to deny the home side the victory with a header from a corner.

Highlights of Barcelona's 1-1 draw with Espanyol in La Liga.

Pique's gesture came after Espanyol reported the defender to the Royal Spanish Football Federation for referring to them as "Espanyol from Cornella" following the teams' Copa del Rey tie last month.

Mina, an €11.8 million signing from Palmeiras, has not yet played for the club since he arrived in January but he has been on the bench for the last three matches.

"These types of situations motivate Pique", Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde said.

However, Barcelona's 22nd game unbeaten broke their own club record and kept the possibility of a broken league record on track.

Unbeaten start to the league season, runaway favourites for the title already, and yet they can genuinely claim they've been unlucky.

The Spaniard was jeered loudly by the Espanyol fans with every touch of the ball throughout the game in Cornella.

Granero won the ball in midfield before finding Garcia in space down the right, and after Lucas Digne failed to close him down, the veteran winger swung in the ideal cross beyond Pique for Moreno to stoop and head beneath Ter Stegen.

Pique, whistled throughout the contest, signalled for the home fans to be quiet and he was subsequently involved in an altercation with Moreno in the closing stages as the defender revelled in his role as the pantomime villain. Moreno had to be contained as he tried to go after Pique.

Espanyol vs Barcelona is also the clash between the best attack versus one of the worst attacks in Liga.

"The least I could do was bring silence to the Espanyol fans", he admitted in his post-match interview.

Espanyol have been in fairly good form this season as they look to put as much space between themselves and the relegation zone as possible.

It was the fifth straight game without a loss for Leganes, which rested several regular starters ahead of its game at Sevilla in the Copa del Rey semifinals on Wednesday. Espanyol won the first leg 1-0 and then lost the second leg 2-0.
