Six More Weeks of Winter as Punxsutawney Phil Again Sees His Shadow

February 2nd is Groundhog day, the day that Punxsutawney Phil comes out of his burrow in Gobblers Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania and we find out if winter will continue.

If it is sunny, he will see his shadow and retreat back inside - and winter will linger on for another six weeks. However, if he sees a bit of cloudiness, then spring will arrive early, and everyone can take their tops off.

On Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney, Phil's "Inner Circle" - garbed in top hats and tuxedos - announced his prediction at 7:25 a.m. Friday.

But those in Pennsylvania claim that Punxsutawney Phil, who they claim is 131 years old, is the only groundhog capable of weather forecasting, and all others are "imposters".

The hedgehog was the original animal forecaster for the holiday. If he does, it means at least six more weeks of winter.

Since 2010, Phil has only predicted an early arrival of spring three times. Over the last 30 years, Phil has only been right 20% of the time - must be all that wild grass he's eating.

The Stormfax website researched all the predications since 1887 and found that he has seen his shadow 104 times (79 percent).

Canadians celebrate Groundhog Day, too.

Groundhog Day has become famous across the globe, helped by the Hollywood film - so here's what you need to know about Punxsutawney Phil, the meteorological marmot at the centre of it all. While Phil's all-time predication accuracy is only 39 percent, he isn't the one to blame.

This tradition started in Europe as Candlemas Day. Now thousands of people from across the country travel to the small town of Punxsutawney, located 84 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.
