"The Act East Policy requires increased people to people contact, trade ties and other relations with countries on India's east, particularly ASEAN countries", he said.

Assam Industry Minister, Chandra Mohan Patwary said the Government of India has committed that a new policy to attract investment in the region is being drafted.

Union Minister for Northeast (DoNER), Dr Jitendra Singh, with Union Ministers Suresh Prabhu, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Dharmendra Pradhan and dignitaries representing different States at the Global Investors' Summit Advantage Assam, at Guwahati.

Officials said that over 250 MOUs worth Rs 60,000 crore are expected to be signed on the first day of the summit on Saturday.

Two more oil firms Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and Numaligarh Refinery Ltd (NRL) also evinced interest to invest Rs 3,432 crore and Rs 3,410 crore, respectively, the spokesperson said.

He further said that the event vindicates the Government of India's priority is North east's development.

The Prime Minister said, the highest 60 billion U.S. dollars FDI came to India in 2016-17.

But he cautioned against companies involving themselves in complicated businesses that are not part of their core competency. The three companies have not offered many details regarding the specifics of their plan just yet.

Pointing to initiatives announced in the Budget on health insurance and free cooking gas connection for the poor and transparency in tax regime, he said, all the schemes of the Union government are oriented towards bringing about a qualitative change in the lives of the people.

Tesring Tobge, Prime Minister of Bhutan, arrived here on Thursday, to take part in the summit.

"In the last three years, the government has spent more than Rs 5,000 crore on development of railways in the Northeast".

"Assam has a unique advantage of being at a strategic geographic location with a strong connectivity network, making it an ideal destination for doing business with the ASEAN countries", Mr Tiwari said.

Ghai said that he wants to make Assam a technically high standard State, with its rich cultural heritage.

Assam government today signed a public private partnership (PPP) deal with Tata Trust for advanced cancer care in the state.

Talking about the first global investor's summit, the minister informed that for the first time a bilateral discussion between India and Bhutan will also take place.
