2 students shot inside LA school, student suspect arrested

Three other people had minor face or head injuries, some from broken glass, but weren't shot, officials said.

Police investigating the shooting of students at Sal Castro Middle School said the handgun that was carried into a classroom appears to have fired a single round from inside a backpack. The incident involved a semiautomatic weapon, which was confiscated, Los Angeles Police Lt. Chris Ramirez said.

Police didn't disclose what led to the shooting, but said in a statement that the evidence "suggests that this was an isolated incident, involving the negligent discharge of a firearm, where innocent children and a staff member were unfortunately injured".

The 15-year-old boy who was hit in the head with a bullet and initially was in critical condition.

A 15-year-old boy was hit by gunfire in the left temple and was rushed to hospital, where he was alert and talking when he arrived, said Dr Carl Chudnofsky, head of emergency medicine at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Centre. She is said to be in a stable condition.

The school shares its campus with Belmont High School.

Just yesterday, another shooting occurred in an American public school; however, this time authorities are concluding that the incident was accidental. She has been booked into a juvenile hall on suspicion of negligently discharging a firearm on school grounds.

Jordan said he saw a hole in the backpack, which the girl was holding, when she asked him to hide the gun for her. All were expected to make a full recovery.

On Friday morning, LAPD officials addressed parents at the school.

Jordan Valenzuela, the 12-year-old student who was next door, told The Associated Press by telephone that after her heard the gunshot and screaming, children in the other classroom started banging on the door connecting the two rooms.
