Cranberries singer was preparing new version of 'Zombie'

Following the death of Dolores O'Riordan, Tim Parry's father, Colin, paid tribute to the singer after hearing that Zombie was about the incident that claimed his son.

The band, which includes guitarist Noel Hogan, bassist Mike Hogan and drummer Fergal Lawler, went on a hiatus in 2003 but reunited in 2009.

The Cranberries enjoyed worldwide success in the 1990s with singles including Linger and Zombie. A year ago they released an series of acoustic recordings of their earlier hits.

The Cranberries' lead singer died at the age of just 46 on Monday.

Kings Of Leon bassist Jared Followill tweeted: "RIP Dolores O'Riordan".

While everyone knows the chorus thanks to Dolores' memorable vocals and is aware it's a protest song due to the reference of the 1916 Rising in the second verse, some may not know the exact incident Zombie was written about. Their guitar-based sound had an alternative-rock edge at a time when grunge was storming the music scene. I'd never heard somebody use their instrument in that way.

Yesterday, the Limerick singer's publicist announced the heartbreaking news in a statement.

She was kind and lovely, I got her autograph on my train ticket and it made my day. "Had the honour of signing (sic) with her for pope john paul in the Vatican many years ago".

"It is with deep regret that we can confirm a guest sadly passed away at the hotel on January 15", a spokeswoman for the Hilton said.

In a post on Twitter, the school added: "The school community of Laurel Hill Colaiste FCJ would like to express its heartfelt sympathy to the family of Dolores O Riordan on their sad loss. Our thoughts go out to her family at this bad time", wrote Duran Duran on Twitter. "Dolores and the band are very disappointed that it has come to this and send their honest apologies to all fans and ticket holders, and hope to see you all again in the future when Dolores is well again".

"I was talking to her a couple weeks before Christmas she seemed happy and well - we even spoke about maybe writing some songs together - unbelievable god bless her". The_Cranberries gave us our first big support when we toured with them around France years ago! "Have always adored her songs and voice".

"At this early stage the death is being treated as unexplained".
