"On December 20, the Foreign Ministry via its embassy in London requested the British Foreign Office consider accrediting Mr. Assange as a diplomatic agent in Ecuador's mission in the United Kingdom", Espinosa said.

He added that, as the South American authorities know, the only way for Assange to resolve is to leave the embassy and face the court.

There is no evidence at this point that US authorities have filed any charges against him, including secret charges, but CIA Director Mike Pompeo a year ago called WikiLeaks a "hostile intelligence service".

Ecuador subsequently asked the United Kingdom to recognise Mr Assange as a diplomatic agent - a move that could have given him immunity.

Sweden dropped their investigation over the 2010 allegations past year, but British police have said they are still seeking to arrest him for failing to surrender to a court after violating bail terms.

Responding to the UK's refusal to grant him diplomatic status, Ecuador's foreign minister Maria Fernanda Espinosa said: "No solution will be achieved without worldwide co-operation and the co-operation of the United Kingdom, which has also shown interest in seeking a way out".

July 2014: Assange, 46, loses his appeal to have the Sweden arrest warrant thrown out.

Declared by the United Nations in 2016 to be a victim of "arbitrary detention" in violation of worldwide law, Assange has been publicly charged with no crime outside of violating his conditions of bail in the UK.

His website WikiLeaks published leaked intelligence from the United States and although it has not sought his arrest, Mr Assange is concerned the USA is still considering prosecuting him.

The rape allegations case remains open and active. Were he to step one foot outside the embassy walls, he would find himself handcuffed and bundled away by the Metropolitan Police.

In March, Swedish prosecutors offer to question Assange in London.

The demand for an end to the state persecution of Julian Assange must be taken up by the worldwide working class.

March 9, 2017: Former UKIP leader Nigel Farage is spotted leaving the Embassy.

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, responding to a reporter's question in April about whether arresting Assange was a priority, said it was.

The newspaper said Assange may also have been given a passport.
