The girl, identified as Gabby Barrett, was taken to the nearby St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Responding officers noted the child had "obvious severe burns about her extremities".

The medical examiner found evidence on the girl's body of multiple traumatic injuries, as well as signs of battered child syndrome - multiple injuries, multiple sites and multiple ages, according to local police.

Police said Diaz and Fields are believed to be driving a black 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier with the MI plate DTR 1854.

Police say an arrest warrant has been approved for Diaz and Fields on the charges of felony murder, second degree murder, first degree child abuse and torture. Diaz told them Fields punched her several times in the head and smashed her cellphone, according to a Sumpter Township Police report.

Sumpter Township police said in a release that the fugitives were captured while driving near Lake Park, Georgia by agents of the U.S. Marshals Service in Macon Georgia, who worked in conjunction with the Lowndes County Sheriff's Department.

"She didn't have to pass the way she did, but I hope we get justice for her really soon", Barrett said. I know we may not have a lot of information at all, but, it just hurts'.

Barrett's grandmother, Deborah Barret said: "She was a ball of joy". WDIV reported that Diaz was booked on weapons charges at that time. She always had a smile on her face, loved to play.

The police have appealed to any member of the public with information as to the whereabouts of Diaz and Fields to come forward.

A GoFundMe page has been set up by the victim's kin to raise funds for her funeral.
