Deputy killed in Pierce County, armed and unsafe suspect at large

Shots were fired and the deputy was struck. An active manhunt is under way for his suspected shooter.

"During the 911 call, dispatchers could hear screaming and a scuffle taking place", the sheriff's office reported.

When deputies arrived, a suspect fled and one of the deputies pursued him. One was found dead at the scene.

The responding deputy encountered two burglary suspects, the department said. Police are actively looking for another man who ran from the scene and is believed to be armed and unsafe. Another suspect is still at large. He was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and a black beanie.

Pierce County Sheriff's Department spokesman Ed Troyer identified the deputy as 34-year-old Daniel McCartney, of Yelm. Trudi and I are saddened and praying for the deputy's young family as they grieve the loss of their husband and father.

The suspect, who authorities described as armed and risky, was the subject of manhunt by K9 units in the area of 200th Sreet as the suspect is being actively searched for by K9 units.

A Pierce County deputy has died after being shot responding to a robbery call near Frederickson, Washington, the Sheriff's Department confirmed.

The deputy was transported to a hospital in Tacoma where he died.

All schools in the Bethel School District, have been closed for the day as a precaution.
