The blaze quickly spread to the upper floors, leaving one person seriously injured while 11 others suffered non-life threatening injuries, officials said.

A fire destroyed a building and injured 16 people in the Bronx on Tuesday, just days after the worst fire in New York City in 25 years killed 12 people. The store is on the ground floor with apartments above.

Bitter cold was making the fight against the fire hard.

Photos and video showed thick black smoke billowing from the building as firefighters doused water on the roof with outside temperatures hovering in the teens. Nearby, icicles hung from power lines and ladders.

Bill, which was tabled at the Indian parliament last week, is likely to come up for discussion on Tuesday. According to it, the 15% seats of the private medical colleges will be decided by the management of fees.

Another resident escaped with her two children and their dog.

"The smoke was so heavy".

Adults and children fled from the three stories of apartments above, including a man who ran outside with no shirt and no shoes. "I came downstairs barefoot, no shirt, nothing".

Crews were still working to get the fire under control Tuesday morning. Nigro said authorities would enter the building to determine the cause of the fire once it's deemed safe.
