Minimum wage raises coming to 18 states on New Year's Day

Minimum wage workers in Ireland will see an increase in their pay cheques from Monday, 1 January.

. Workers in New York City who are employed at businesses with at least 11 employees will now earn a minimum wage of $13/hour.

"This is the fourth time that the Fine Gael-led Government has introduced an increase to the minimum wage since it was cut in 2010".

The 15-cent increase for 2018 is the largest hourly increase since 2012, when the wage rose by 36 cents an hour, according to the Department of Economic Opportunity. Numerous bumps slated for New Year's Day come courtesy of recent ballot initiatives approved by voters or bills passed by statehouses, in red and blue states alike. The minimum wage is scheduled to go up again at the end of 2018, to $11.10, at the end of 2019, to $11.80, and at the end of 2020, to $12.50. The rate is slightly lower for some trainees and teen workers. It will reach $15 an hour on July 1, 2021.

All that success by activists has prompted a backlash from Republican state lawmakers seeking to rein in minimum wage hikes. The minimum wage covers fast-food workers at more than 130 chains operating in NY, including Arby's, Burger King, Chick-fil-A, Dairy Queen, Domino's Pizza, KFC, McDonalds, Panera Bread, Pizza Hut, Starbucks, Subway, Taco Bell and Wendy's. More than two dozen states now have "preemption" laws on their books that block localities from implementing their own raises. Block says MI has the highest state minimum wage in the region.
