Bomb rips through St Petersburg supermarket with shrapnel injuring 10 Christmas shoppers

Ten people were injured in the attack.

The Washington Post notes that only a few days ago, Russian President Vladimir Putin thanked President Donald Trump and CIA Director Mike Pompeo for providing a tip based on American intelligence that thwarted a planned string of terrorist attacks in St. Petersburg.

The Sputnik news agency reported that the Committee believe an improvised explosive device "filled with projectiles" caused the blast.

The shrapnel that was part of the explosive device proved the explosion "was a terror attack anyway".

The Investigative Committee, the nation's top investigative agency, opened a criminal case on the grounds of attempted murder, and confirmed that four people were taken to hospital while six of the injured were treated at the scene.

"You know that yesterday in St Petersburg a terrorist act was carried out", Mr Putin told the audience.

The Federal Security Service said seven suspects linked to Islamic State were arrested in connection to the alleged plot.
