"After being in this business for almost 42 years, I can say I have not seen savagery like this", the Troy Record reported the local police chief as saying.

Though they have yet to make any arrests, Tedesco said that the full force of the police department will be employed against the suspect or suspects.

Two young children and their mother were among the four people found killed in an act of "savagery" this week inside their basement apartment in the upstate NY city of Troy, police said Wednesday. "I don't have the word". They had not released the victims' identifies or said how they were killed.

Troy Police Capt. Daniel DeWolf said the deaths are "certainly suspicious" and were being treated as homicides. Authorities are not releasing their identities pending notification of relatives.

"The emotions of a police officer is something you repress because there is a job to be done, but no one involved in this case is ever going to forget it".

The couple now face felony charges of possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, and no drug stamp. Patrick Jiron posted 10 percent of his $100,000 bond and has been released from custody.

Tedesco said the victims were an 11-year-old boy, a 5-year-old girl and two adult women, ages 22 and 36. Autopsies were being conducted Wednesday.

Tedesco said it is likely that the family was targeted.

He urged the public to come forward with any information regarding the deaths, which are now being investigated as a quadruple homicide. It is unclear how long the bodies were in the home before they were discovered. "But we do not believe this was a random act, and we don't believe there's any imminent danger to the community".

A heavy police presence remained at the upstate apartment Wednesday morning as authorities continued to hunt for clues in the deaths.
