While the letter does not discuss any potential problems from pot use during pregnancy, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises pregnant women to avoid it.

In 2009, only about four percent of pregnant women were using marijuana. "From 2002 to 2014, the prevalence of self-reported, past-month marijuana use among USA adult pregnant women increased from 2.4 percent to 3.9 percent".

There's been a rise in the number of pregnant women who are using marijuana to soothe anxiety and morning sickness.

The new research from Kaiser Permanente suggests that women know that their doctors would not approve of their marijuana use: Less than half of the women that tested positive for marijuana copped to using it when asked in a survey.

The legalization of marijuana may have contributed to the increase in use found by the study, KABC reported.

California was the fist state in the USA to legalize medical marijuana in 1996.

"Marijuana is [one of] the most commonly used illicit drugs during pregnancy, and its use is increasing", the study says.

Despite the uncertainty of how the drug affects the body, California will legalize recreational marijuana for adults over the age of 21 beginning January 1.
