Apple admits to slowing older iPhones over battery issues

While Apple admitted its software updates have considerably slowed the speed of older iPhones, the reason behind the move is not what angry customers suspected.

Mind you, iPhones will alert you when their batteries have degraded to the point where it impacts performance.

Extended to the iPhone 7 with iOS 11.2, the "feature" will spread to "other products in the future", basically aiming to "prolong the life" of your iDevices... at the expense of overall performance.

"It would be beyond stupid and incredibly short-sighted for Apple to do this and, if it was actually true, would likely lead to tangles of a governmental and legal nature that no company like Apple would ever want to happen", Matthew Panzarino wrote.

It was speculated that Apple was using iOS to throttle processor power consumption in order to preserve battery life and performance. Also, Lithium-ion batteries have a limited life span and they do degrade over a period of time.

"Lithium-ion batteries become less capable of supplying peak current demands when in cold conditions, have a low battery charge or as they age over time, which can result in the device unexpectedly shutting down to protect its electronic components", the company said in a statement.

John Poole, the founder of Primate Labs, said in his analysis of the Geekbench data that "users expect either full performance or reduced performance with a notification that their phone is in low-power mode".

What Happened To Julian Assange's Twitter Account? Social Media Confused
The Twitter account of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has re-appeared after mysteriously disappearing Monday morning. This would suggest that it was deleted on his end, rather than suspended by Twitter.

At its core Apple is more keen on selling phones than batteries.

To find the truth behind the reports like "Apple slows down old iPhones", the benchmarks site has plotted the kernel density of single-core scores for iPhone 6s and 7 running different versions of iOS.

In a statement this afternoon, Apple explained that this "feature" was first implemented with the iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, and iPhone SE a year ago and most recently came to the iPhone 7 with iOS 11.2.

Apple also says iPhones work best at room temperature, or between 32 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

Instead of spending all your money buying the latest version, just purchase a new battery. As sometimes batteries age up if you put them in sun.

Replacing an iPhone battery with Apple is free if the handset is still under warranty.

"I think this software change is a good change", said Wiens.
