Venus Williams fatal crash: No one is to blame, police say

Venus Williams was involved in a fatal vehicle accident back in July, and we now know that the tennis superstar won't face charges in the incident.

Jerome Barson, 78, died from injuries sustained when his wife Linda's auto collided with the tennis star's vehicle in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, on June 9.

A new report has revealed that the Palm Beach Police Department has concluded their investigation and found that 37-year-old Williams was not at fault in the accident.

"Based upon this investigation and relevant Florida state statutes, no charges will be filed in this case", police wrote, according to the Sun Sentinel's Tonya Alanez and Erika Pesantes.

Barson and his wife drove into the intersection when the light turned green, hitting Williams' SUV.

An investigation found that Williams had a green light when she entered a busy intersection before a vehicle turning left in front of her forced her to stop. The Barsons' 2016 Hyundai Accent hit Williams' SUV at 40 miles per hour (65 kph).

Williams initially claimed that she did nothing illegal to cause the accident, and Florida law enforcement eventually stated that they believed her, after reviewing footage from a nearby surveillance camera that caught the whole thing.

The Barson family's attorney, Michael Steinger, said Dowling's conclusions are wrong and the suit will be pursued.

"Ms. Williams clearly violated our client's right of way because our client had a green light, as indicated in each and every police report issued in this case to date", Steinger said in a statement. Williams broke down in tears when asked at a tournament press conference about the crash and Jerome Barson's death. "The unknown dark-colored vehicle... started a sequence of events resulting in (Barson) crashing into (Williams)", the report said.

The department did not immediately respond to NPR's request for comment.

Weeks after the crash, Williams competed at Wimbledon, losing in the finals on July 15 to Garbine Muguruza. She also owns a small percentage of the Miami Dolphins.
