Holiday Travel Weather: When Should We Leave To Beat The Snow?

While strong winds are forecast in Scotland this week, elsewhere in the country balmier temperatures are expected in the run-up to Christmas, with an "exceptional" 16C on Tuesday or Wednesday, Mr Gaze said. In fact the only year in the past 80 that it hasn't was last year, when there was no snow cover at all on Christmas Eve, and only 3cms on Christmas Day which subsequently melted away.

And don't forget, if you have a bet on a white Christmas Day, you only need a single flake to fall. A cold front will drop through tonight around 7:00pm and should come in dry with a subtle wind shift, adding colder air overnight. The high temperature is forecast to reach 41 degrees under mostly cloudy skies.

Low pressure will race east from the Ozarks to SC and spread rain from the Interstate 64 corridor to the Gulf Coast. An area of high pressure over eastern Canada will be responsible for the cool and dry forecast through midweek, and that high may try to hang on through the first part of Friday as well.

Virginia Woman Mauled To Death By Her Dogs
Stephens' friend, Barbara Norris , told NBC12 that she didn't believe the dogs would kill Stephens and that they slept in her bed. There are photos of Stephens on her Facebook page with a brindle pitbull, one she had written was named "Tonka".

AccuWeather predicts rain possible Christmas Eve night, with a high of 49 and low of 22. Granted these areas have a lot more snow on the ground than Boston, but still, this will be a significant blow to the existing snow-pack in the entire region. Wet weather may be an issue on Interstates 85 and 95 south of Richmond. The more likely scenario would be for another rain event or perhaps a widespread ice storm. Of course, the milder pattern means that we'll not only lose our current snow cover, but it will be rather hard to see any new snow before Christmas, putting a big dent in our chances for a white Christmas this year. For Virginia, that means highs in the 30s and lows in the teens. While some may like wearing shorts on Christmas, it seems the overwhelmingly majority wants cold air, and most importantly snow, on Christmas.

Look for more updates later this week, plus travel forecasts focused on the nation's busiest airports.
