Shocking: MP remains on top in rape cases: NCRB

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report on crime in 2016, released on Thursday (November 20) has reiterated certain popular beliefs while negating others.

Cyber crime has witnessed a rapid increase as the State registered 616 cases in 2016 when compared to 536 cases in 2015 and the NCRB report has put the AP in the sixth place in the list of States with highest cyber-crime cases. In the crimes against children, 145 cases were of kidnapping or abduction, 46 were of compelling girls for marriage.

Among states, Maharashtra now ranks third behind Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

Since previous year, the total number of crimes in the country has increased by 2.6%, with Delhi reporting the highest crime rate of 974.9 under IPC crimes followed by Kerala (727.6) and Madhya Pradesh (337.9) against the national average of 233.6.

In this category Orissa is second after New Delhi which reported a crime rate of 43.6 in this category. The city had seen 107 cases of juvenile delinquency in 2014 and 128 in 2015. A total of 91 cases were registered in Karnataka in 2016. Delhi also reported the most number of cases of economic offences at 5,942 cases or 19.3 per cent followed by Jaipur at 4,742 cases and Mumbai at 4,191 cases.

Murder decreased by 5.2 per cent (from 32,127 cases in 2015 to 30,450 in 2016), rioting 5 per cent (from 65,255 cases in 2015 to 61,974 in 2016 ), dacoity 4.5 per cent (from 3,972 cases in 2015 to 3,795 in 2016) and robbery 11.8 per cent (from 36,188 cases in 2015 to 31,906 in 2016).

This category has also shown an increasing trend, with the number of cases reported in 2016 standing at 12,317 over 11,592 cases in 2015.

The national capital also recorded the highest crime rate of 182.1 compared to the national average of 77.2 and reported the highest number of murders - 479 out of 2,194 cases (21.8 percent), followed by Bengaluru 10.4 percent (229 cases) and Patna 8.9 percent (195 cases).

Goa saw a high number of cheating cases while Delhi had more forgery incidents.

Uttar Pradesh has reported the maximum number of arms seizure (27,189) followed by Madhya Pradesh (8,019) and Rajasthan (5,757 Arms) during 2016. Under the head crime against women in metropolitan cities, as many as 1055 cases have been reported from Indore. With 5,453 cases of kidnapping and abduction, the city beat Mumbai and Bengaluru, which recorded 1,876 and 879 cases, respectively. There is an increase in crimes including rapes, kidnapping/abductions, offences against children, atrocities against Dalits and tribals, senior citizens and the number of juveniles involved in crimes.
