Several mortar shells were fired at an Israeli military outpost near the northern Gaza Strip on Thursday causing material damage without causing any injuries, according to Israeli media. The Israeli military later said the sirens were a false alarm. The Israeli forces were aiding construction of an underground wall near the fence separating Israel from Gaza.

Just over two hours later, local residents in Gaza reported hearing further Israeli air strikes on the Strip.

"In response to the mortar shells fired at a military post adjacent to the northern Gaza Strip, (Israeli) tanks and (Israeli) aircraft targeted four Hamas military posts in the northern Gaza Strip", the army said in a statement.

In his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention, Trump tried to link Democrat Hillary Clinton to the controversy. The legislation would increase maximum prison penalties for immigrants caught repeatedly entering the United States illegally.

It was unclear who was responsible for the mortar fire, with a number of militant groups operating in the Gaza Strip, but Israel holds Islamist movement Hamas responsible for all such incidents. Palestinians face near daily fire from forces while tending to their farmland near the border with Israel and while fishing within the reduced fishing area.

No group has claimed responsibility for the alleged rocket attack, while Palestinian officials have yet to issue comment regarding the army's assertions. Hamas and Israel have fought three wars since 2008, including one in 2014 in which Palestinians used tunnels as a way to launch attacks on Israel, according to The Washington Post.
