Local merchants hosting special events for Small Business Saturday

Small Business Saturday came hot on the heels of Black Friday.

Makenzie Danley stopped by Ida Red on Peoria in Brookside.

Although Wright attributes the small business's success to the unique merchandise, she says running the business is still hard. "It really contributes to the community".

Wood said Small Business Saturday is a great way to promote businesses and get people to shop small.

Both shops will be open Saturday in hopes of encouraging more people to shop locally.

In 2010, American Express launched the national Small Business Saturday campaign to encourage people to spend money locally during the holiday season.

"We're the businesses that volunteer in this community, we're the businesses that donate our time, we give back to our community", said Traci Goodwin, owner of FIG Boutique in Petal.
