Titled Reports of Sexual Assault Received at Military Installations and Combat Areas of Interest, the document tallies adult sexual assaults (not including domestic abuse) at Army, Navy, Marine and Air Force bases around the world, as well as in areas of conflict where US service people are deployed.

Of the Army bases, the largest number of sexual assaults were reported at the installation in Fort Hood Texas, where 863 reports were made over the four years.

The figures released on Friday come after a separate report earlier this year which highlighted how there had been a steady increase of sexual assault reports over the past several years.

"We can not be afraid to talk about sexual harassment and assault".

Sexual assault reports have more than doubled since 2013 at Fort Carson, Colorado, according to a report released Friday by the Pentagon. They include active-duty service members, activated Reserve and National Guard troops and civilians who allege assaults by active-duty military personnel. Campbell spokesman in a statement. That number grew to 100 in 2014, 114 in 2015 and then 146 in 2016. During that span, reports of sexual assault at the base in Norfolk peaked at 291 in 2015.

In 2016, the most recent data the department has on the prevalence rates of sexual assault showed a decrease from 6.1% of active-duty women in 2012 to 4.3% in 2016, and from 1.2% of active-duty men in 2012 to 0.6% in 2016, SAPRO said. Brown said some cases are decades old but any reporting victim has access to counseling and medical attention while the report is investigated.

The data was collected and filed by fiscal years, from 2013 through 2016. Meanwhile, an unrestricted report is referred for criminal investigation and to commanders.

"One of the features of the department's reporting program is that service members can report allegations of sexual assault at any time and at any place", said Dr. Nate Galbreath, deputy director DoD Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office. The database doesn't show what types of sexual assault were alleged or whether the victims were male or female, and the department notes that incidents reported didn't necessarily happen on the base.

Other bases that recorded higher numbers included Fort Hood, a U.S. Army Base in Killeen, Texas, that fielded 199 reports of sexual assault previous year, and Camp Lejeune, a Marine base in Jacksonville, N.C., that received 169 reports. The incident could have occurred "while on deployment, while away on leave, or even prior to entering the military", the Pentagon said.
