The Saints (8-2) trailed 31-16 when Kirk Cousins completed a 7-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jeremy Sprinkle.

The Washington Redskins lost their top running back and maybe their season.

It wasn't. The defense couldn't stop New Orleans.

The Redskins running back was carted from the field with his right leg in an aircast following an ugly injury in the third quarter of Sunday's game against the Saints.

The Redskins held a 15-point advantage over the New Orleans Saints late in the fourth quarter.

In the closing seconds of the fourth quarter, the Redskins moved the ball to a first down at the New Orleans 34 - within range of a potential game-winning field goal - but Cousins was flagged for intentional grounding on first down, moving the Redskins out of field-goal range.

Sure, they were playing future Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees in his home at the Superdome, but the odds of the Saints scoring a touchdown, converting an onsides kick or coming up with a defensive hold, then scoring another touchdown and converting a two-point conversion, just to force overtime, was statistically impossible.

It was the first time in Saints history that they had ever come back from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Faced with a fourth-and-1 from their own 15, tight end Niles Paul, a blocker lined up 5 yards behind center, took the shotgun snap and ran straight ahead for a 5-yard gain and the first down.

The Saints made it easy for them, marching 87 yards in five plays for the touchdown.

The Redskins had the ball last in regulation. They faced no second-down plays on the drive and picked up yards in chunks of 17, 18, 29 and 18 yards.

With 2:53 left in the game Brees hit his first touchdown pass in two games with a 3-yard strike to Jeremy Hill.

Kamara finished Sunday's game with eight carries for 42 yards along with six catches for 75 yards and a score.
