"In their relentless effort to expand gang membership and gain traction within our communities, they aggressively target our children in the schools".

Sixteen of the arrestees are USA citizens and five have legal status in the United States, the department added. Gang members from MS-13 have been implicated in several high-profile homicides around the United States.

According to Rybicki, an entire eight-man MS-13 "clique" (a local division of a gang) was arrested in the operation.

"This is a great operation, but we are not done", the ICE chief said.

Thirty-eight individuals were arrested over the last month in Maryland and Northern Virginia as part of a national effort targeting members of the violent street gang MS-13, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.Three were arrested in Northern Virginia on immigration violations.

The gang was created in Los Angeles during the 1980s because the U.S government failed to enforce immigration laws, which allowed El Salvador youths to sneak into the United States. The second phase from October 8 to November 11 focused on the U.S. Another 53 were arrested in EL Salvador in an earlier operation.

Sixteen of the 214 arrested were US citizens and 198 were foreign nationals, of which only five had legal status to be in the country. The remaining 198 were foreign nationals, of which only five were legally allowed to be in the U.S. Sixty-four of them illegally crossed the border as unaccompanied alien children, the press release claimed. He said the arrests will help make the country safer "by taking MS-13 off our streets for good".

"With more than 10,000 members across 40 states, MS-13 is one of the most risky criminal organizations in the United States today", said Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Further operations such as Raging Bull will begin to chip away at this gang's operations in the country.

ICE Deputy Director Thomas Homan said combating MS-13 has always been a priority for the agency.

"Definitely some UACs end up being bad people and enter the country to do bad things", said Homan, who is serving as acting ICE director and was nominated on Tuesday by Trump to head the agency.
