Rhode Island unemployment rate remains at 4.2 percent

Pennsylvania's unemployment rate reached a 10-year low in October, according to new data released Friday by the state Department of Labor & Industry.

Statistics show annual growth is strongest in the leisure and hospitality sector, with 7,100 jobs added. Both of those represent changes of less than 0.5 percent.

The New England unemployment rate averaged 3.8 percent.

Nationally, the unemployment rate in October was 4.1 percent, down slightly from 4.2 in September and 4.8 percent a year ago.

Topeka's unemployment rate fell to 2.9 percent in October, down four-tenths of a point in September and down a full percentage point compared with October 2016.

Government employment, at 772,600, increased by 3,300 positions.

The agency says the number of unemployed residents dropped by more than 5,000 since a year ago, while the number of employed residents rose over the same period by almost 8,000. That's down from 2.7 percent in September and 3.2 percent a year ago.
